Making money

The title of this post might seem like I am about to dole out some advice on money-making. Not that I am very efficient at it, but who cares? Advice is free!

On the other hand, this post is about people who have made money off of me. Don't get me wrong, they have not robbed me, or done anything drastic along those lines. All they did was charge me exorbitantly for some service, which was worth so less.

This category of people falls mainly into the hospitality business. Contrary to the word 'hospitality', this business is more like 'expensivality' a word I coin to describe expensive, outrageous bills at the end of the day.

The first category of businesses that engage in 'expensivality' is the dining industry. I once decided to enter a restaurant which advertised 'live music'. Much to my dismay, the live music was incomprehensible, the food was just ok, the patrons could not care less. The live 'musician' was accompanied by two guitarists who tried to keep up with his rhythm (or lack of it).

Midway through the blaring vocals, the live musician came over to my table and asked me where I was from. When I said that I am from Kenya, he said ' Keeeeeeeeeenya' into the microphone and sang something which was supposed to make me feel special. It did not. I felt about 2 dozen eyes on me, looking at me as if I was a antique piece of art from Kenya. The next few moves of my mine were closely examined by people in the restaurant. The live musician seemed very happy to have drawn attention away from his singing and onto me. Not my kind of night.

The tab was the loudest. Louder than the music. Atleast that is how I felt. In addition to tipping the 'live' musician, the tab burnt a hole in my pocket. When I stepped out of the restaurant, I was dazed. Dinner has never been so loud for me. Ever. But it gets that way in the business of 'expensivality'. On another day, when I do not feel so happy about my finances, I will give you my theory of how malls are the cheerleading squad of the 'expensivality' business. Till then, enjoy the peace of a quiet dinner, at home. It is worth it.
